Supernatural thriller AT SILVER FALLS set to haunt Cannes Film Festival

AT SILVER FALLS, directed by up-and-coming US filmmaker Brett Donowho, will have its international market screening at Cannes.

Inspired by the true-story of the unsolved murders of two twin girls, AT SILVER FALLS draws us into the shadowy, malevolent world of ‘Silver Falls’, a small town plagued by a series of unexplained deaths. When newly arrival Jordan, an orphaned teenager (played by movie debutant Alix Elizabeth Gitter), becomes haunted by the ghost of a murdered young girl, she is compelled to uncover the shocking truth...

Director Brett Donowho says about the film: “AT SILVER FALLS is as much a mystery thriller as it is a horror film. The emphasis is on story and character development, rather than the sudden scary jumps and visual effects often associated with the genre. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of those as well!”

Outsider Pictures & Enderby Entertainment Film in association with Tony-Seven Films presents AT SILVER FALLS a Brett Donowho film, written by Cam Cannon, Rachel Long, Brian Pittman and starring Steve Bacic, Tara Westwood, Tadgh Kelly, James Cavlo, Erick Avari and introducing Alix Elizabeth Gitter. It is produced by Rick Dugdale. Executive Producers are Steve Bacic, Paul Hudson, Erik Nord, Tia Campbell Peterson & Daniel Petrie, Jr.

Horror Channel launches Horror Club with special screening of INBRED

Horror Club will open its ghoulish doors for the first time at The Horse Hospital on Thursday 3rd May from 7pm with a special screening of Alex Chandon’s riotously gore-soaked INBRED.

This special event, open to all horror fans, will be introduced by Horror Channel's Emily Booth and genre expert/ writer Billy Chainsaw. Chainsaw will interview Chandon after the screening. Chandon, an award-winning writer and director, is probably best known for his outrageous genre feature films PERVIRELLA and CRADLE OF FEAR.

Entry is free and seats can be won by entering a competition exclusively through Horror Channel, http://www.horrorchannel.co.uk/competitions.php?feature=90

Emily Booth, who has a cameo role in the film, commented: “Horror Club is a chance for Horror Channel to give something back to the fans, who'll not only get to see a cool new horror flick but with an exclusive audience of like minded people. We want to evoke the atmosphere of that midnight movie screening - mates, drinks, laughs and thrills! And on a more serious note fans will also get to meet the director and of course us nice chaps at the Horror Channel."

INBRED, which went down a storm at this year’s FrightFest, is an hilariously warped nightmare with nowt taken out. Four young urban offenders and their two care workers embark on a community service weekend in the remote Yorkshire village of Mortlake. Before you can say ‘Ey up’, they upset the yokels with their city ways and put themselves in the gravest of dangers. This best bad taste un-PC gore-soaked riot is more fun than a ferret down the trousers…oh, wait a minute, that’s in there too…

Cast includes Jo Hartley, James Doherty, Seamus O’Neill, James Burrows & Nadine Rose Mulkerrin

It will be released in the UK by Anchor Bay later on in the year.

Derren Brown brings Svengali back to the West End for a final run

Derren Brown’s 2012 Olivier-nominated show, Svengali, will take up residence at London’s Novello Theatre for 27 performances only, from July 12 – Aug 11. This is the last chance to see the sell-out live show that has mesmerized the nation, performing in over 150 venues

Derren, who professes that he loves writing and performing on stage more than anything else, says:

"I enjoy the stage shows more than anything else. This one is fun, dark, funny, freaky. Live on stage is the best place for what I do: it's unpredictable, and the audience knows there's no possibility of judicious editing. Plus we've put in new material for this year and the show has grown and changed on the road more than any other."

Svengali is written by Derren Brown and Iain Sharkey with Stephen Long and
produced by Michael Vine, Andrew O'Connor & Corrie McGuire for Objective Talent Management.

Tickets go on sale from 10am, Friday 23 March.  Press night is July 17, 7pm.

On stage as well as on TV Derren is in a class of his own, exhilarating audiences with his unique brand of entertainment. For the past ten years he has created TV and stage performances that have stunned audiences, debunked the paranormal and encouraged many to improve and enhance their own mental abilities. His first show appeared in 2000, Derren Brown: Mind Control, and was followed with Trick of the Mind, Trick or Treat and a series of Specials including the controversial Russian Roulette, the hugely popular Events, Hero at 30,000 Feet and the more recent Experiments.

Derren’s live stage shows have earned him a string of award nominations, including three Oliver nominations. He has won both the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment Show, and a Silver Rose d’Or for Variety.

Horror Channel presents a double bill season of brain-munching zombie movies. Including five UK TV premieres.

Rising up from the Friday 6th of April are a putrid plethora of zombie movies, both contemporary and classic, celebrating the popularity of one of the genre's most enduring archetypal villains. The season reflects the diverse range of metaphors these ungodly creatures represent – from the breakdown of society to our addiction to consumerism and taste for the military.

6th Apr @ 22:55 – NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
The season kicks off with the genre classic, George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. It's 1968 and America watches horrified as grimy black and white news footage from Vietnam reveals the true monsters in this world – us. It was this political backdrop that spurred Romero to make his ground-breaking movie, harnessing the horror of watching a national disaster unfold on the news – before it comes knocking on your own front door.

6th April @ 00:50 - ZOMBIE KING (2003)
Enter a world of high camp populated by masked wrestlers, spunky tattoo babes and a legion of flesh-eating zombies as Ulysses and his bizarre masked outfit of muscle men and women investigate a zombie outbreak in a small American town. Directed by Stacey Case.

13th April @ 22.55 – STAG NIGHT OF THE DEAD (2011) *UK TV PREMIERE
A mix of 'The Hangover' with 'Night of the Living Dead' is how Neil Jones' sexy zomedy STAG NIGHT OF THE DEAD has been described. Stag nights are messy affairs at the best of times, but in this movie party tricks go beyond leaving your best mate naked on the M4 – as the Stags sign up for a dodgy game of Zombal at a shady military base. Naturally, a stripper comes along for the ride.

13th of April @ 00:55 - CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980)
Horror maestro LUCIO FULCI throws open the gates of Hell, unleashing a plague of Zombies, in this notorious 'Shock and Gore' masterpiece. In the sleepy village of Dunwich, the dead are rising, local girls are vomiting entrails and the town misfit is about to get his brains drilled out. Will they find a way to stop the rotting hordes before everyone in town gets devoured? Flesh-splattered zombie insanity from the King of Euro-Terror.

20th April @ 22:55 – COWBOYS & ZOMBIES (2011) *UK TV PREMIERE
The third UK TV premiere in the season is COWBOYS AND ZOMBIES, where Cowboys and Indians have to bury the hatchet in order to fight the Undead. A meteor crashes in the dusty gold-mining town of Jamestown and Mortimer, a trigger-happy bounty hunter, gets more than he bargained for when he finds the locals turning into flesh-eating zombies. Directed by Rene Perez.

20th April @ 00:35 – ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES! (2008)
A drug experiment gone wrong produces a league of bloodthirsty zombies. It is up to a small band of exotic dancers trapped in a gentleman's club to fight back. Together they must rely on their wits and skills to survive the night, and pray that they don't become victims of the flesh-eating zombies. Directed by Jason Murphy

27th April @ 22:55 – APOCALYPSE OF THE DEAD (2009) *UK TV PREMIERE

Shot in Serbia, lending it a real political edge. Director Milan Todorovic says his 'biohazard zombie thriller' was inspired by the dire ecological situation in his hometown. Definitely a film for zombie aficionados as it stars the now legendary Ken Foree – who found fame in George Romero's hugely influential Dawn of the Dead – here he is in action as Agent Reyes.

27th April @ 00.50 – DEAD HEIST (2007) *UK TV PREMIERE
The final UK TV premiere in the Season of the Dead blends a traditional bank heist movie with zombies, with a bit of hip hop thrown in for good measure. Directed by Bo Webb, the film stars Big Daddy Kane – one of the most influential golden age rappers, who puts in a memorable performance as Hunter – a mysterious bad boy and something of an expert on zombie scum.

Neo Giallo Thriller ‘Tulpa’ starts shooting in Rome

Italian production company IDF, owned by actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (Il Postino) has begun principal photography on Federico Zampaglione’s eagerly-awaited third feature, TULPA.

Award-winning actress Claudia Gerini, who has just completed a leading role as Marie Cecile in Christopher Smith’s TV adaptation of Labyrinth, stars in her most controversial role to date. She plays Lisa Boeri, a respectable and upwardly mobile businesswoman who, by night, frequents the notorious sex club ‘Tulpa’ in search of dangerous forms of pleasure. When her lovers start getting murdered in horrible ways, to avoid a personal scandal, she tries to deal with it herself with truly nightmare consequences.

TULPA also stars Michele Placido (Romanzo Criminale), one of Italy’s most renowned actors/directors, alongside Nuot Arquint (Shadow) and Michela Cescon (Sacred Heart).

Shot entirely on location in Rome over five-weeks, TULPA is based on a story by genre veteran Dardano Sacchetti, with a screenplay by Giacomo Gensini and Federico Zampaglione. It is produced by IDF, Giovanni Emidi and Silvia Natill in association with Federico Zampaglione and Claudia Gerini. Director of photography is Giuseppe Di Maio. Make up and Special Effects are by Leonardo Cruciano & Bruno Albi Marini with music by Francesco Zampaglione and The Alvarius

Federico, who is described as Italy’s Rob Zombie, said today: “I'm very excited to start shooting TULPA, but I’m aware it’s a very difficult film to make, I need to maintain a constant creepy and oppressive atmosphere and the violence is actually very, very graphic. I have to prove myself. It's a real challenge but I’ll do my best to give new blood to the Italian Gialllo genre".

The Dead rise and reveal all in a new book

Director/ Producer Howard J Ford of hit Zombie film THE DEAD has written an uncompromising and disastrously toe-curling behind-the-scenes, blow-by-blow account of the making of the feature film that has become the global zombie movie of the year.

SURVIVING THE DEAD – illustrated with never before seen stills from the shoot - takes us from England to Africa on a harrowing journey as The Ford Brothers try to hold together a film shoot with more horror than any fictional plot could possibly contain. For anyone interested in the harsh realities of filmmaking or nuts enough to actually want to make a film, then this is a must-read guide.

Amongst many other secrets exposed within the book, one chapter reveals the true budget for THE DEAD and it’s definitely a shocker!

“Frustratingly”, Howard says, ‘although I’ve since read that our budget was $2-5Million, we actually had just under $150 thousand dollars - $30 thousand of which went on corruption & bribery just to keep us moving. The crazy thing about this is that I have directed soap powder commercials that run for only 30 seconds with larger budgets than the entire 100 minutes that is ‘The Dead”.

How they pulled this off and survived to tell the tale is revealed in detail for the first time only in the book, as are: A full expose on the fiery situations that went down on location between Malaria-ridden lead actor Rob Freeman and Jon Ford and exactly why Jon became known locally as ‘The crazy One’, plus numerous tips and humorous insights on all aspects of the film business.

Currently only available from the official SURVIVING-THE-DEAD.com website, the book can be pre-ordered from today for a discounted £2.99. It will be go on sale from 1st March at a cost of £3.99 and will then spread to Amazon, ITunes and many more…

From vintage terror to new blood - Horror Channel celebrates British Horror past and present

Following the success of last year’s ‘Cruel Britannia’ season, Horror Channel presents ‘Heritage Of Horror’, which continues to showcase and celebrate British horror at its finest. Here we have two classics from the vaults and two brand new films, yet to be shown on UK television.

First up, on Friday March 9, 22:55, is Gary Sherman’s 1973 DEATH LINE. Set on the London Underground, this moody shocker features brilliant horror icon Donald Pleasance in the lead role as a cockney copper. Hammer Horror star Christopher Lee also shows up in a small cameo. This is one of Guillermo del Toro’s all-time favourites.

Then, on Friday March 16 22:55, we jump forward four decades to bring you the UK TV premiere of Jonathan Glendening’s 2010 sexy werewolf chaser 13 HRS - which sees hot ‘Hollyoaks’ star Gemma Atkinson turn her hand to horror for the first time. The film, which won ‘Best British Horror’ at the Grimm Up North Festival, also stars Tom Felton, Isabella Calthorpe and Simon MacCorkindale.

Next up, on Friday March 23 22:55, is the all-time classic BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (1971). Featuring an all-star cast of great British thespians this is a gritty and at times gruelling and grisly slice of prime genre product. A truly disturbing and shocking slice of 17th century horror mayhem featuring devilish and demonic behaviour and eroticism – this film is certainly not for the feint hearted…

Finally, on Friday March 30 22:55, we bring the season bang up to date with the UK TV Premiere the psychological thriller PSYCHOSIS (2010), directed by first-time horror filmmaker Reg Traviss and starring Charisma Carpenter, who found mega fame in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. Film4 FrightFest announces guest line-up for Glasgow FF 2012

Audiences at this year’s Film 4 FrightFest event at the Glasgow film Festival are in for a treat as no less than six directors will be attending.

One of the most eagerly anticipated movies in the line-up is THE RAID. This action film to end all action films is virtually guaranteed to blow the roof off the Glasgow Film Theatre with its ramped up sequences of super-exhilaration and has already been snapped up for a major Hollywood remake. So we are thrilled to welcome Welshman director Gareth Evans to Scotland, via his home in Indonesia, to discuss all things Glock and roll and star Iko Uwais.

CRAWL director Paul China and his producer brother Ben China are travelling from Australia to share the excitement their superbly slow-burning thriller is currently generating across the globe.

Another set of brothers will be arriving from Rome to present L’ARRIVO DI WANG/THE ARRIVAL OF WANG. Antonio and Marco Manetti, collectively known as the Manetti bros. have become a major force in Italian fantasy over the past few years with such movies as ZORA THE VAMPIRE and THE 17th FLOOR. Their wonderful slice of playful sci-fi will reveal in no uncertain times why they have been asked to direct the remake of STAGE FRIGHT and a sequel to TORSO.

From Los Angeles comes Padraig Reynolds, director of the shocker fantasy RITES OF SPRING, who will be talking about rising horror star A J Bowen and why he’s thanked on Ti West’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL.

Another key Italian figurehead, travelling from Rome to join us is SHADOW man Federico Zampaglione. The Italian Rob Zombie, is bringing over the opening sequence of his new giallo horror TULPA to show in public for the very first time. This is a world premiere from the lead singer of the Italian rock band Tiromancino you will not want to miss.

Festival co-director Alan Jones said: “We know it’s important to our audience that they meet the talent behind the terror and it’s that respectful interaction that makes FrightFest extra special within the fan community”.

The UK’s favourite horror fantasy festival returns to its second home at the Glasgow Film Festival for the 7th year from Friday Feb 24 to Saturday Feb 25, Eleven new must-see genre titles will be screened, ten of which are UK premieres.

TI West’s The House of the Devil to receive its UK TV premiere on Horror Channel

From the director of THE ROOST & INNKEEPERS Ti West comes slow-brewing, old school psychological horror at its finest, freakiest and most fiendish. A terrific cult cast (EATING RAOUL’s Mary Woronov, MONSTER SQUAD’s Tom Noonan, ET’s Dee Wallace), a superb synthesized rock and 80s hit soundtrack and smartly nostalgic style to match, West’s occult chiller, shot in 2009, is eerily subtle before slamming home a tension-laden devilish finale.

Student Samantha has just moved into her own apartment and needs some fast cash for the rent. Answering a campus advert for a babysitter, she ends up at the creepy old remote country home of the strange Ulman couple. But something is clearly wrong. The pay is too high. There seems to be no child. A total lunar eclipse is about to further darken the night skies. And Samantha’s blood-freezing satanic panic begins…

Ti will also be presenting a director’s night on Thurs 23 Feb from 21:00, introducing his three favourite horror films. His picks? Creepshow 11, The Evil Dead and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

“God Save The Queen” flops in sing-along study of national anthems

The UK may have the world's least infectious national anthem and France the most irresistible one, according to a study by two music academics with a special interest in why some songs prompt us to sing along more than others.

The pair used a complex statistical model to measure the ability of different national anthems to make listeners spontaneously join in and sing along.

The study was commissioned by the producers of “Sing-a-long-a Grease”, (www.singalonga.net/grease), now on a UK tour to mark the 40th birthday of the original stage version of the classic musical set in a Fifties high school.

“This is the year of the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, when we’re all meant to join in”, says Ben Freedman, producer of Sing-a-long-a Grease. “So, we wondered: will our national anthem help us do so? How well does it inspire participation and how does it compare on this with other nation’s anthems.”

The method used to analyse the anthems was developed by Dr Alisun Pawley, an American-born musicologist and singing teacher, as part of her PhD at the University of York, and Dr Daniel Müllensiefen, a German music psychologist at Goldsmith’s, University of London,

Their study examines the national anthems of six nation-states and two UK regions (Scotland and Wales) with national identities.

Their model analysed over 30 musical variables – from “the amount of vocal effort” to “the length of phrases” and “the number of nonsense syllables used at important times” – in order to discover what really influences sing-along behaviour.

While the French anthem, “La Marseillaise”, tops the world “sing-along-ability” league, “God Save the Queen” ranks last among the six nation-states studied, squeezing America’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” into second-last.

Only “Flower of Scotland” scores worse but it’s not an official anthem, just as Scotland itself is not a nation-state. Indeed, this study may not boost its odds of becoming one.

“I don’t think that any country is going to like the results, except the French”, says Dr Pawley.

The French victory in the rankings, says Freedman, is “annoying but probably deserved”.

He adds: “There’s a famous scene in the movie Casablanca, when the Resistance leader orders the band in Rick’s Café to strike up “La Marseillaise” and everyone hearing it, bar the Nazis, spontaneously sings along for all they’re worth”, says Freedman. “It’s hard to imagine the same scene with God Save the Queen.”

England may have beaten Germany in – to quote the football chant – “two world wars and one World Cup” but Germany’s anthem, “Das Deutschlandlied” (Song of Germany), with music by Joseph Haydn, outscores “God Save The Queen” in the anthem rankings.

(If this is the real reason that Germany routinely beats England at football, then it does not augur well for England’s chances against France in this summer’s European Championships. “The French anthem could be worth a goal start to them”, says Freedman.)

“Advance Australia Fair” in second place also outranks “God Save The Queen”, as does “The Star-Spangled Banner” in fifth. Even “O Canada”, the underwhelming anthem of one of the world’s least exciting countries, ranks two places ahead of us in fourth.

The academics were also asked to measure the sing-along-ability of three of the best-known songs from the musical “Grease”.

Some salve to our national pride is that “God Save The Queen” surprisingly outscored two of the three Grease songs analysed – “You’re The One That I Want” and “Grease Lightning”.

Indeed, all the anthems studied outscored “Grease Lightning’”. “We’re keeping quiet about that”, says Freedman. “But we do note that “Summer Nights” from Grease wipes the floor with all-comers – including ‘La Marseillaise’.”

Indeed, he points out, both the Olympics and the Jubilee are summer events. “So, what better way for us to come together at such moments of national importance than by joining in a sing-along of ‘Summer Nights’? It would surely boost our medal tally and raise the jubilee onto another level.”

Can Anything Be Done To Rescue “God Save The Queen”?
– Yes, Get Robbie Williams To Sing It

“Yes”, answers Dr Pawley, since the biggest influence on sing-along behaviour is “vocal performance” – who sings a song and how – while the sentiments expressed by the lyrics make little difference.

“First, have it sung in a key that would allow for high chest voice singing, with really clear consonants and lots of energy.”

Second, have it sung by the right person.

“In America you often have a star performing the national anthem”, says Dr Pawley. “We could adopt that tradition in the UK.” But we need a star with the right qualities.

The top five qualities in a singer likely to make us sing along are:

  • Using a high chest voice.
  • Singing with lots of energy.
  • Singing with clear consonants.
  • Singing with less vocal embellishment.
  • Being a male (Pawley: “The most annoying result, for me anyway”).

The best choice of all, she suggests, would have been Freddie Mercury, the late, great lead singer of the group (fittingly) Queen.

“He had all the right qualities”, says Dr Pawley. “He sang with high energy, a high chest voice and he pronounced all his consonants clearly.”

The best living singer would be Robbie Williams.

“He would be perfect”, says Dr Pawley. “He ticks all the boxes.” He sings with energy and clear consonants. “He uses a straightforward singing style with little vocal embellishment, which is also favourable.”

“He’s also a national icon who appeals to different ages and genders.”

Finally, he is also, of course, male. The study found that a male singer is more likely to inspire participation than a female one, for reasons that may be rooted in evolution or history.

“It might be that men are more reluctant to join in with female voices than the opposite”, suggests Dr Pawley. “Or, it might be linked to a battle-cry and that traditionally we looked to men to lead us in battle.”

Love, death, addiction and trauma are given a bloody, twisted blend in one of the most jagged and intense thrillers of the year.

Winner of the Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), Best Actor (AJ Bowen) and Best Actress (Amy Seimetz) at the 2010 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, A Horrible Way To Die is Wingard’s third feature, after the promising debut Home Sick and the well-received Pop Skull.

Compared to directors such as David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, and Shinya Tsukamoto, Wingard is regarded as one of the current trailblazers redefining the genre. His next film You’re Next, which took the 2011 Toronto Film Festival by storm, has firmly established him as a major talent for the future.

The producers of the much admired zombie survival flick THE DEAD are releasing the film’s soundtrack

The producers of the much admired zombie survival flick THE DEAD are releasing the film’s soundtrack, which features a haunting original score from film composer Imran Ahmad, with vocals from top Eritrean singer Saba Tewelde and kora from Gambian virtuoso Jally Kebba Susso.

The soundtrack will be available to download from iTunes and Amazon from 12th December.

Howard Ford, the film’s producer and co-director, commented: “We were absolutely blown away by Imran’s unique and moving score for ‘The Dead’. We simply had to release it because of the sheer number of people asking where they could get their hands on the soundtrack. Also with the US DVD/Blue Ray release coming up on 14th February the demand is likely to grow, so I hope people are as moved and haunted by this incredible score as we continue to be”.

Imran, who worked closely with Howard and Jon Ford added: “The music intends to reflect the beauty of the natural world turning into a twisted and distorted reality. I hope the listener is able to share the journey across rural Africa that is portrayed in the film.”

The other contributing musicians are flautist Alex Teymour Housego on Indian flutes and percussionist Sass Hoory on African drums.

Trinity X to release Englund’s devilish INKUBUS in the UK on Monday Feb 6

Murder, gore and mayhem ensue as two giants of the horror genre, Robert Englund and William Forsythe team up for the first time in supernatural horror thriller, INKUBUS, which will be released by Trinity X on DVD in the UK, Monday Feb 6, 2012.

Directed by feature film debutant Glenn Ciano, INKUBUS tells the gruesome story of the demon Inkubus (played by Englund) who is hell-bent on destroying the one man who almost captured him thirteen years ago, Detective Gil Diamante (William Forsythe).

Shot in just 15 days, Ciano has gone on record as saying he wanted the film to be a "nuts and guts" throw-back to the 80s genre film.

Englund, who is known for working with new-blood directors such as Adam Green, Tim Sullivan and Scott Glosserman explains why he took the role: "I deliberately now look first at scripts from newcomers and Glenn Ciano's INKUBUS was such an intriguing project. People like him have shone a new light on the genre and provided it with a new and viable business model".

Synopsis:
A ghastly beheading calls Detective Caretti (Joey Fatone) back to Woodhaven police station, where the skeleton crew find themselves in for a long and deadly night as the demon Inkubus (Robert Englund – A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddie Vs Jason) returns. With a murderous legacy dating back to the middle-ages, Inkubus is hell-bent on destroying the one man who almost captured him thirteen years ago, Detective Gil Diamante (William Forsythe – Halloween).

Katy Perry beats Emma Watson & Miley Cyrus to "Grease" remake role

Katy Perry has beaten Emma Watson, Miley Cyrus and Amanda Seyfried in a public vote for the best stars to cast in a remake of the classic 1978 movie, Grease.

Perry and Zac Efron are the people’s choice to succeed Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, who played Rydell High sweethearts, Sandy and Danny, in the original film of the 1950s throwback musical.
Such is the conclusion of an online poll of over 2,000 Britons, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Sing-a-long-a Grease (www.singalonga.net/grease/) which starts a UK tour in January 2012, to mark the 40th anniversary of the original New York stage version of Grease in 1972.

Justin Bieber revealed recently that the job he most wanted was the lead role of Danny in a remake of Grease, with Miley Cyrus as Sandy", says Ben Freedman, producer of Sing-a-longa Grease. "But we wanted to know who the public wanted."

The answer is definitely not a pairing of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, which ranked just seventh when YouGov offered respondents the chance to pick it from a list of 10 celebrity pairs to play Sandy and Danny.

In fact, Cyrus polled far better when paired with Zac Efron, star of the High School Musical films, coming then in joint third position.

No less than four of the 10 pairs suggested in the poll featured Efron as Danny – and they promptly bagged the top four places, making Efron the clear choice to play Danny.

The pairing of Efron and Katy Perry, however, pipped the combination of Efron and Harry Potter star Emma Watson as the best pair to play Sandy and Danny. Then came Efron and Cyrus, Efron and Mama Mia’s Amanda Seyfried, and singer Taylor Swift with Twilight star, Robert Pattinson.

"Emma Watson has the same innocent, girl-next-door quality as Olivia Newton-John did in the original", says Freedman. "But the people now seem to prefer someone brasher and sexier, like Katy Perry."

Efron, the poster-boy for tweenyboppers, also has a more wholesome image than Perry. This would mean a kind of sexual role-reversal from the original movie, where Travolta’s Danny was the bad boy and Newton-John’s Sandy the good girl.

"Maybe this reversal is a sign of the times and social change", says Freedman.

Then again, it could be just that Perry, like Newton-John but unlike Watson, is known primarily as a singer.

Efron, 24, is the same age as Travolta was when the original Grease movie came out in 1978. Perry, 27, is older than Olivia Newton-John was when she played Sandy at the age of 20. But then some of the actors playing High School kids in the original movie were in their thirties, which didn’t seem to matter.

Sing-a-long-a Grease unveils 2012 UK tour

It's the one that the public want, say its producers, who previously brought us Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music and Sing-a-long-a Abba. "Sing-a-long-a Grease is the show that audiences have been asking for since we first presented a singalong show back in 1999", says producer Ben Freedman. Now, at last, Summer Lovin', Grease Lightning and the chance to sport a pink wig or greased quiff while belting You're The One That I Want, are coming to a theatre near you.

The show's national tour starts in Swindon on 13 Jan, 2012. The 40th anniversary of the original stage show falls on Valentine's Day, when the tour hits Leicester. Other venues are now booking into July next year.

More tour dates are being added weekly but producers expect the show to visit over 80 theatres nationwide by the end of 2012.

Alongside the national tour, Sing-a-long-a will also play once a month at the Prince Charles Cinema in London's West End, the global headquarters of the whole Sing-a-long-a phenomenon.

"Sing-a-long-a Grease is much more than 'just a film'", says Freedman. "It's a show, an event, a fashion extravaganza and the most fun you can have with your clothes on."

Clothes, indeed, play a key role in the Sing-a-long-a experience. Punters don their own versions of the Fifties high-school garb worn at Rydell High – the powder-pink bomber jackets of the Pink Ladies and the black leather biker gear of Danny and the T-birds.

Every performance starts with a Sing-a-long-a host who warms up the audience, trains them how to "hand-jive", deploy the contents of their free goodie bags and heckle in all the right places.

40 Years Young

It was on February 14, 1972 that a new stage musical called Grease premiered at the Off-Broadway Eden Theatre in downtown Manhattan, before transferring to Broadway in June, 1972.

The 1972 show, about two lovers in 1950s US high school, was based on an earlier, grittier "play with incidental music" called Grease Lightning, first staged in Chicago the previous year. But it was not until February 1972 that Grease as we know it was born.

The 1972 musical spawned the 1978 movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The movie was a huge hit on its first release. Twenty-five years later it was voted the greatest musical ever in a 2003 poll conducted for Channel 4's show on the 100 Greatest Musicals.
The birth of Sing-a-long-a

The unique, interactive entertainment form known as Sing-a-long-a, meanwhile, was allegedly born in an old people's home in Inverness in the late 1990s. The nurses wanted to involve the residents in an interactive group therapy. They therefore wanted to screen Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and gave out song sheets so that everyone could sing-a-long.

The idea was then developed for the Sound of Music for London's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 1999, before opening at the Prince Charles Cinema in August of that year. After an initial eight-show run soon sold out, while attracting huge media attention and regular shows has been running ever since not only in London but all around the world.
